Soaring Food Prices Focus of 3-Day Summit

World leaders gathered Tuesday in Rome, Italy for a three-day summit to form a global response to soaring food prices.

Hosted by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the main topics at the summit were ways to battle soaring food prices, the changing climate and finding ways to help millions of people battle hunger.

The FAO hopes to secure pledges of $30 billion from nations represented at the summit to provide short-term aid and to generate long-term strategies to safeguard food production.

In his opening address at the summit, FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf warned that the current world food crisis could further endanger world peace and security and called for innovative and imaginative solutions to the problem.

“Important today is to realize that the time for talking is long past,” he stressed. “Now is the time for action.”
