According to Berkeley County, South Carolina Coroner Glenn Rhoad the death of 10-year-old Johnny Jackson was the result of “secondary drowning,’ a phenomenon that results in asphyxiation up to three days after actually taking water into the lungs.
Police in Goose Creek have said Jackson was swimming at a pool at his apartment complex last Sunday when he swallowed some water. After returning to his apartment he complained that he felt tired and took a nap. He was later discovered to be having breathing difficulties and water was coming out of his nose.
He was rushed to Trident Hospital where he died shortly after.
Rhoad confirmed that Jackson had a build-up of water in his lungs and essentially drowned.
