Another death in a long string of detergent suicides forced Japanese police to evacuate an apartment building.
A man apparently killed himself by mixing common household detergents and chemicals to produce a toxic gas of hydrogen sulfide. Residents noticed a strange smell coming from his apartment, and discovered a note on his door warning others of the dangerous gases.
The man’s suicide is the latest in a wave of deaths from mixing commonly available household chemicals to form hydrogen sulfide gas. The gas often forms noxious clouds that can affect anyone nearby, often triggering mass evacuations.
According to the Japanese government, there were 84 such suicides in May. Web sites encouraging suicides and offering specific instructions have been to blame, and authorities have begun cracking down on them.
