Tidal Wave Floods Parts of Jakarta

A tidal wave flooded areas of an Indonesian city as government workers and private citizens created emergency embankments to hold back the water.

Areas of Jakarta, which is home to 10 million people, were inundated when a tidal wave surged into parts of the city.

The World Bank has been monitoring tidal waves and flooding in Jakarta, and warned last week of a tidal surge in parts of the city.

Jakarta typically faces floods during the rainy season, and can also be inundated by high tides in low-lying districts near the coast.

Efforts are underway by the Jakarta Public Works Agency to install permanent embankments that will help reduce the flooding. The permanent embankments will be complete in July or August.
