Zimbabwe Opposition Leader Morgan Tsvangirai Released by Police, No Charges Filed

Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has been released by police after spending nearly eight hours in custody for endangering public security.

Tsvangirai, head of the Movement for Democratic Change, is preparing for his presidential run-off election with current president Robert Mugabe. The opposition leader chalked the detention up to “the usual harassment which is totally unnecessary.”

Police accused Tsvangirai of endangering the public safety after he addressed a rally without authorization.

Tsvangirai has accused Mugabe of resorting to intimidation ahead of the June 27 election to retain his position. Mugabe has held the presidential seat since Zimbabwe gained their independence in 1980.
