UN Officials Praise $1.5 Billion Donation from Islamic Development Bank; Says Much More is Needed

United Nations officials acknowledged Wednesday a $1.5 billion donation from the Islamic Development Bank, saying the money would significantly aid efforts to address the global food crisis.

Much more is needed, as the U.N. indicated it could take up to $30 billion a year to resolve the food crisis.

The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization is hosting a three-day summit in Italy to address growing concerns about soaring food prices and declining food supplies.

World leaders including French president Nicolas Sarkozy, Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda and World Bank President Robert P. Zoellick are in attendance at the conference, which ends Thursday.

In addressing attendees at the summit, Zoellick stated, “This is not a natural catastrophe. It is man-made and can be fixed by us. It does not take complex research. We know what has to be done. We just need action and resources in real time.”
