70 people were arrested following a six-month nationwide investigation by Australian police into a global child pornography network. Four children were removed from their homes during the sweep.
Police reported that twenty other people have been summoned to appear in court, and all 90 face charges of accessing images of child porn on the Internet.
Authorities reported this was one of the largest investigations into child pornography in Australian history. Further arrests are expected.
A European web site drew the attention of investigators after a hacker posted child porn images which attracted 12 million hits in 76 hours. 2,800 hits came from Australian computers, and authorities indicated they had identified about 1,500 of those people or computers through their Internet protocol addresses.
Australian investigators seized thousands of DVDs and dozens of computers during the sweep. Possession of child pornography carries a maximum of jail sentence of 10 years.
