Several diplomats from the United States and the United Kingdom were detained by police in Zimbabwe on Thursday following a violent incident involving a group loyal to current president Robert Mugabe.
The group of diplomats had been traveling in a convoy through Bindura when they were stopped by police. Officers directed the diplomats to return to the police station but they refused and drove off. They were then chased and forced off a road just north of Harare by a group of “war veterans” who then slashed tires and threatened to burn their vehicles.
After being detained by police for nearly six hours the 10 U.S. embassy officials and four UK High Commission officials were released.
The White House responded to the incident saying the attack was “unacceptable” and “would not be forgotten” and the National Security Council called the Zimbabwe event “outrageous.”
