5.3 Magnitude Aftershock Rattles China

As a 5.3 magnitude aftershock shook Sichuan province in China Thursday, government officials and relief workers were already evacuating an area below a quake-spawned lake amid fears of flooding.

Rising water levels in Tangjiashan lake, formed by landslides from the devastating May 12 earthquake, raised concerns for the safety of people in towns and tent camps downstream.

Officials had planned to drain water from the quake lake on Thursday, carving spillways to carry the water safely away from the devastated town of Beichuan. Earthquake survivors living in tent camps were forced to move to higher ground as other cities further downstream were also evacuated.

Thursday’s aftershock that sent waves rippling across the Tangjiashan, and the heavy rains expected this weekend have exacerbated flooding concerns.
