9/11 Mastermind Wants to be Martyred

The alleged mastermind of the September 11, 2001 attacks was arraigned Thursday, and has asked to be allowed to dismiss his lawyers and plead guilty.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed stood before a U.S. military judge in Guantanamo Bay on Thursday and said he wanted to be martyred for his role in the 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington.

Mohammed and four co-defendants have been in U.S. custody since 2002 and 2003. They have been held at the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cub in September 2006.

Charges were officially sworn against the men this year on May 9, and include murder in violation of the law of war, intentionally causing bodily harm and various counts of terrorism.

Attorneys for the men claim they have not had sufficient time with their clients to prepare for a trial, which prosecutors have requested for September.
