Dinara Safina shocked Svetlana Kuznetsova on Thursday with a straight set 6-3, 6-2 victory to advance to her first Grand Slam singles finals to face Ana Ivanovic.
Safina delivered 39 winners in the match and converted 6 of 11 break point opportunities while limiting Kuznetsova to just three break points in nine chances. Kuznetsova struggled with her serve throughout the match, especially her second efforts as she won just 25 percent of her second offerings.
Thursday’s match was the first time Safina had played in a Grand Slam semis and will now look to capture her first Grand Slam title against Ivanovic. Safina had advanced to the fourth round in last year’s French Open and was bounced from the 2008 Australia Open in the first round.
