Black Japanese Watermelon Sells for $6,000

Talk about rising food prices.

An 18-pound premium black watermelon sold for a record $6,125 Friday in Japan.

The black Densuke watermelon is grown only on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. Annual harvests produce a few thousand each year, driving up prices.

Premium melons like the black Densuke regularly sell for record-setting prices. Three years ago, one sold for $3,000.

The watermelon sold Friday had dark green skin – almost black – and looked more like a bowling ball than a fruit.
