With three weeks left until the run-off in Zimbabwe’s presidential election run-off authorities have banned several rallies scheduled by the Morgan Tsvangirai led Movement for Democratic Change citing security fears.
Tsvangirai is set to face current president Robert Mugabe in the June 27 run-off after a highly contested initial vote in March that Tsvangirai claims he won.
The MDC leader was set to address a rally in Bulawayo when the order from authorities halted the event.
According to police “because the MDC had complained that its leaders were targets for assassination the authorities could not guarantee their safety and were therefore banning several future public rallies.”
In response to the ban the MDC called the act “rank madness” and noted that their only way of communicating with voters is through rallies.
