Medvedev Warns Georgia and Ukraine, Says Nato Entry Would Cause “Spiral of Confrontation”

New Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has taken an aggressive stance against plans from Georgia and the Ukraine to join Nato, telling the two former Soviet republics that if they continued to pursue membership into the military alliance it would invite a “spiral of confrontation.”

Russia and Georgia already have a fractured relationship due to Russia’s support of separatists in the regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Medvedev believes the conflict could be resolved but if Georgia were to join Nato the tension would rise and confrontation in the volatile area could escalate.

As for the Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov pointed to a friendship treaty signed in 1997 which stipulated, according to Lavrov, “two parties not to do anything which would create threats or risks for the security of the other party.”

Lavrov continued, “This was reiterated by President Medvedev, that we do not believe Nato membership for Ukraine would serve... the interests of the two countries.”
