D-Day Anniversary Commemorates 64 Years Since June 6, 1944

The D-Day anniversary will be commemorated Friday, June 6, 64 years after the memorable Battle of Normandy in World War II.

D-Day, the first day of the bloody Battle of Normandy, was the largest seaborne invasion at the time, involving over 850,000 troops crossing the English Channel from the United Kingdom to Omaha Beach in Normandy, France by the end of June 1944.

D-Day was the first battle in Operation Overlord, the phase of World War II fought between the German forces and the invading Allied forces of the U.S., Great Britain and France. Operation Overlord commenced in on August 25, 1944 with the liberation of Paris.

D-Day was a costly battle as many soldiers were killed, but the battle led to the loss of the German position in most of France.

The American cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, France contains rows of identical white crosses and Stars of David, immaculately kept, commemorating the American dead.

On June 6th every year, thousands of tourists and relatives visit the cemetery to pay their respects to the valiant soldiers who gave their lives during this pinnacle battle in World War II.
