Russia Declares State of Emergency in 7 Regions Over Wildfires

Seven Russian regions are under a state of emergency because of nearly 700 separate wildfires burning in the area. Emergency Situations Ministry representative Irina Andrianova said many of the fires were started accidentally by residents’ carelessness in dropping cigarettes or failing to extinguish barbecues properly. The fires are fueled by the drought and heat wave.

Around 500 towns and villages are affected. Thousands have lost their homes and some 34 people have been confirmed dead.
