When Marcia and her sisters looked for Mama’s jewels on top of her armoire what they found instead was their 1958 sets of chest X-Rays, which they had been required to take before entering the US, and tons of yellowed papers, some handwritten, some typed, some in French, some translated into English.

This was a humorous and totally unexpected outcome of the search for the family hair loom: The discovery after Mama died, that she had preciously kept all of Papa's manuscripts. That was Mama’s special gift and tour de force to sort of bring their father’s back to life!    For the first time in their lives, the girls would get acquainted with a father who for the most part was absent from family life as he was constantly on the go.

Dorothy remembered that her father had produced plays in the spacious and beautiful Theatre in Tunis. But she was never told that her father was a playwright, poet and novelist.  When she saw her father writing at night, she thought he was writing letters to the stamp collector friends he corresponded with.  At one point, she had done some translation of his novel, however, her mind had been influenced by her mother’s discouraging words, and she had not taken his efforts seriously enough, or long enough.

Why hadn't she relinquished this heritage to her daughters fifteen years ago after Papa's funeral?  Why had Suz seized and salvaged the manuscripts, then on an impulse entrust them to Dorothy instead? And above all why had Mama kept these papers, if she had not believed there was some value in them?

For the answer to this mystery, read on.
