China denies allegations that its operatives secretly copied the contents of a U.S. government laptop to use its data in an attempt to hack into computers at the Department of Commerce.
The allegations surfaced after Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez reportedly left a laptop unattended during a visit to China for trade talks last December. Shortly after, three serious attempts to break into Commerce Department data were reported.
U.S. officials say they are investigating to see if the two incidents are related.
Government and military networks in Germany, the United States and Britain have been broken into by hackers backed by the Chinese army, according to reports issued last year.
