U.S. Climate Change Bill Blocked by Filibuster

The climate control bill that would have placed restrictions on emissions allowances from power plants, factories and oil refineries has died on the senate floor after backers of the bill failed to gain the necessary 60 votes to stop a GOP filibuster.

Republican John Warner and Independent Joe Lieberman sponsored the bill that would have cut carbon emissions but Mitch McConnell, Senate Republican leader, led the charge against the bill claiming it would result in “a huge tax increase.”

Prior to the vote President Bush had already vowed to veto the bill.
