Roger Federer has moved one step closer to capturing a career Grand Slam after knocking off Frenchman Gael Monfils on Friday 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the French Open finals where he will meet a familiar foe.
Federer overcame the big serve of Monfils to move into his third consecutive French Open finals and will now face his nemesis Raphael Nadal for the third straight year. Monfils pounded out 10 aces but committed 5 double faults and 40 unforced errors that provided Federer with the needed points.
While Monfils had the big serve he failed to capitalize on break opportunities while Federer was serving, on just 3 of 13 opportunities did Monfils earn the break while Federer captured 7 of 15 break point opportunities.
Federer is seeking his 13th Grand Slam singles title and his first French Open. The past two years he fell in four sets to Nadal
