Pakistan Floods Kill at Least 1,500, Disease Outbreak Feared

Pakistan officials fear the lack of drinking water in flood ravaged areas will cause an outbreak of disease. Syed Zahir Ali Shah, the health minister for Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa, estimated around 100,000 people may already be infected with cholera and gastro diseases, according to AFP.

Monsoon rains triggered floods and mudslides in northwestern Pakistan last week, killing an estimated 1,500 people while thousands of others remain trapped on rooftops and elevated areas. The Pakistan Meteorological Department predicts rain for the next four days in Sindh, Punjab, Kashmir, Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa, northeast Balochistan and Islamabad.
