Ancient Greek Gravesite Uncovered During Subway Construction

Officials in Greece reported Friday that an ancient gravesite containing a wealth of gold jewelry was uncovered during subway construction work in the city of Thessaloniki.

Part of the 2,300-year-old grave had been destroyed by a modern sewage pipe. Authorities said that traces of a wooden coffin remained, containing a female skeleton, four gold wreaths and gold earrings set with semiprecious stones.

Also found within the gravesite were a bronze mirror, a bronze vase and six clay pots.

Founded about 315 BC, Thessaloniki flourished during the Roman and Byzantine eras, from the 2nd century BC to the 15th century AD.
