Amazon.com Inc.'s (NYSE: AMZN) Web site was down for more than an hour Friday afternoon and has remained out of service throughout the day.
An Amazon.com customer sales representative said the outage was due to an upgrade of the company's Web site, but didn't provide further details.
The company's Web site was completely down between at least 1:40 p.m. EST to 3 p.m. The site reads "http/1.1 service unavailable" when accessed.
Amazon.com made revenues of nearly $16 billion over the last 12-months, which translates to about $30,000 in revenue every minute through its Web site.
Several customers believe the site has been hacked, but there is no empirical evidence to prove exactly why the site is offline.
Shares of Amazon were down 4.4% at $80.80.
