“World Ocean Day comes right at the start of the summer, when people all over the country get ready to go to the beach and into the oceans. This World Ocean Day and this summer, we wanted to let everyone know how important and simple it is to lead a bluer lifestyle and to dive into ocean conservation,” said Oceana’s President Jim Simon.
Oceana’s Top Ten guide lets people know how they can easily make a difference and help to S-A-V-E O-C-E-A-N-S. The guide encourages people to start now and get involved in ocean conservation, eat sustainable seafood, and to conserve energy and reduce their carbon footprint. The top ten guide can be viewed in its entirety at community.oceana.org/10-tips.
World Ocean Day was created in 1992 at the United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro as a way for organizations and individuals to come together and acknowledge the ocean’s importance and engage in activities that help conserve this part of our natural world. Since its creation, World Ocean Day has been celebrated in an unofficial capacity by over 700 zoos, museums, conservation organizations and agencies.
On June 2nd, recognizing that the oceans are an important part of U.S. heritage, economy and recreation, and that they are a vital resource for countries around the world, the U.S. President proclaimed June 2008 as National Oceans Month. For the second consecutive year the administration is encouraging others to observe the month with appropriate ceremonies and activities that help protect the oceans and acknowledge their importance.
