Zimbabwe High Court Lifts Ban on Opposition Rallies

A police ban that forbid opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai from conducting rallies during his presidential campaign has been lifted by Zimbabwe’s high court, enabling the Movement for Democratic Change candidate to move forward with his bid to unseat current president Robert Mugabe.

On Friday police had banned the party from organizing any rallies claiming they were a threat to public safety.

In a letter addressed to the MDC the police notified the party of the ban stating:

"The MDC has communicated far and wide, very loudly for that matter, that the lives of some of your politicians are under severe threat from targeted assassination.

"Our continued investigations so far have failed to confirm your party's allegations but still we are not prepared to take any chances by exposing you to the public who may be possible assassins."

MDC lawyer Charles Kwaramba noted the high court’s decision “simply says that police should not interfere with the MDC rallies.”

The police ban was just another tactic that has been implemented by the Mugabe government to halt the progress of the MDC. Over the past few weeks Mugabe has froze all aid agency operations claiming they were helping the opposition and military leaders had told troops they must vote for Mugabe to fulfill their military obligations.

Mugabe has held the presidential office since Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980.
