Jim McKay, Legendary Sportscaster of Wide World of Sports, Dies at 86

Legendary sportscaster Jim McKay, the man who brought the Wide World of Sports into millions of living rooms in America, died Saturday of natural causes at the age of 86.

While McKay will always be remembered for his body of work on ABC’s Wide World of Sports he will perhaps be best remembered for his line, “They’re all gone,” a reference to the 11 Israeli athletes and coaches kidnapped and murdered during the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.

McKay would recall the moment he had to deliver the news to the viewing audience as “the most memorable single moment of my career.”

It was a career that stretched six decades and won him 12 Emmy Awards, including the first ever presented to a sportscaster. McKay covered 12 Olympic Games and was also presented with the George Polk award from Long Island University in recognition of his contributions to journalism.
