Jim McKay Dies At 86

Legendary sportscaster Jim McKay, who is best known for covering the 1972 Olympics in Munich, has died. The 86-year-old died of natural causes Saturday at his home in Monkton, Md.

McKay worked for ABC as a sportscaster on Wide World of Sports. He had the day off when he was called in to cover the kidnappings at the Munich Olympics. Palestinian terrorists had kidnapped 11 Israeli athletes and killed them all. “They’re all gone,” McKay told the world.

“I had to control myself. I was full of emotion. But when you are a professional, it is important to communicate what it is like, to capture the moment,” he later admitted.

President Bush praised McKay for his “skill and sensitivity” in the coverage of Munich. “He was a talented and eloquent newsman and storyteller whose special gift was his ability to make the viewers at home genuinely care about more than just who won or lost,” Bush said.

McKay is survived by his wife, daughter and son.
