The White House issued a statement Tuesday pledging to
support Pakistan in the country’s flood crisis. Monsoon rains triggered floods
and mudslides in northwestern Pakistan last week, killing an estimated 1,500
people while thousands of others remain trapped on rooftops and elevated areas.
"Our relationship with Pakistan goes far beyond our
shared commitment to fight extremists. The United States government stands
ready to continue to assist Pakistani authorities address the difficult
challenges posed by this natural disaster," the statement said.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department predicts rain for
the next four days in Sindh, Punjab, Kashmir, Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa, northeast
Balochistan and Islamabad. Officials fear the lack of clean drinking water may
trigger an outbreak of water-borne diseases, including cholera.
