In another effort to permanently seal the gushing oil
well in the Gulf of Mexico, BP began its “static kill" procedure on Tuesday. Static
kill is a procedure which pumps heavy drilling mud and cement into the well in
an effort to force the oil back down into the reservoir.
The operation started around 4 p.m. ET and could last up
to 3 days.
At least 4.9 million barrels of oil is estimated to have spewed
into the Gulf, making it the largest oil spill in marine waters.
