BP Begins Pumping Drilling Mud in to Oil Well

In another effort to permanently seal the gushing oil well in the Gulf of Mexico, BP began its “static kill" procedure on Tuesday. Static kill is a procedure which pumps heavy drilling mud and cement into the well in an effort to force the oil back down into the reservoir.

The operation started around 4 p.m. ET and could last up to 3 days.

At least 4.9 million barrels of oil is estimated to have spewed into the Gulf, making it the largest oil spill in marine waters.
