Six Killed in Ohio when Small Plane Crashes During Joyride

A small single-engine Cessna plane went down in Sandusky County, Ohio on Sunday afternoon killing all six people aboard including the former state lawmaker who was piloting the flight.

Gene Damschroder Sr., 86, was taking part in a charity breakfast put on by the Lions Club at the Fremont Airport when he invited visitors to take a flight in his plane for the cost of fuel.

According to witnesses at the event the plane took up with no problem but then the sound of the engine sputtering could be heard and then the plane went down in a field.

Damschroder had been a pilot during World War II and had continued flying and providing lessons for the past six decades. He had also served in the Ohio senate from 1973 to 1983 and again from 1995 to 2003.

The passengers on board included: Bill Ansted, 62; Allison Ansted, 23; Danielle Gerwin, 31; Emily Gerwin, 4; and Matt Clearman, 25.
