Colombia has supported controversial Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez in his call to Farc rebel troops to end their struggle and release all hostages they have imprisoned.
While Colombia backs the sentiments of Chavez, defense minister Juan Manuel Santos has said the comments must be backed by actions for any real value to come about.
Chavez noted that Farc was “out of step” and that an armed guerrilla movement in Latin America was out of place. The comments came as a surprise too many after proof was uncovered that documented Chavez had been supporting Farc with large sums of money and arms.
In recent months Farc has taken a serious hit as their leader Manuel Marulanda died in March as did senior leader Raul Reyes.
Farc is believed to have at least 40 hostages and have expressed a desire to trade them for jailed rebels.
Chavez has said by putting down their arms Farc would have a better chance of communicating with the Colombian government. Farc has been fighting for more than 40 years in an effort to overthrow the government and install a Marxist regime.
