BP’s Static Kill “Going Well”

Carol Browner, director of the White House Office of Energy and Climate Change Policy, says BP’s static kill procedure on the Gulf of Mexico oil well is “going well.” BP began the operation Tuesday in another effort to permanently seal the seeping well. Browner says the next step is drilling relief wells.

"We definitely are making progress. The oil hasn't been leaking for some time. The static kill is going well, but ultimately, it's the relief wells we ordered drilled that will be the 'final kill-kill.' Probably, in the next 10 to 14 days that will be done, but (it was) an important step last night,” Browner told CNN’s American Morning.

"Our scientists and external scientists believe that the vast majority of the oil has now been contained. It's been skimmed. Mother Nature has done its part. It's evaporated. And so, I think we're turning a corner here," she added.

Static kill is a procedure which pumps heavy drilling mud and cement into the well in an effort to force the oil back down into the reservoir.

“The well is now being monitored, per the agreed procedure, to ensure it remains static,” BP said in a statement Wednesday. “Further pumping of mud may or may not be required depending on results observed during monitoring.”

At least 4.9 million barrels of oil is estimated to have spewed into the Gulf, making it the largest oil spill in marine waters.
