The European Union and the United States have stepped up their pressure on Iran, threatening the country with further sanctions if they can’t verify they have suspended their nuclear enrichment program.
US President George Bush addressed Iran while speaking in Slovenia, stating “They can either face isolation or they can have a better relationship with all of us if they verifiably suspend their nuclear enrichment program.”
Bush continued, “They've ignored the IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency] in the past and therefore they can't be trusted with enrichment.”
Sanctions include the prevention of Iranian banks from capitalizing on the international banking system as well as sanctions approved by the UN Security Council that include asset restrictions, travel bans on Iranian individuals and businesses involved in nuclear work, and the ban of sales of dual-use items, those items that could be used for military or civilian purposes.
Iran has responded to the pressure by removing assets from European banks and placing them in their central bank.
