The Mexican government reportedly plans to sue BP and the
United States over the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Environment Minister Juan
Elvira told the state news agency Notimex that the government will sue for
damages and costs of monitoring the spill.
Elvira said Mexico has spent $35 million on monitoring
the spill. No oil has been found in Mexican waters, he added.
BP began a “static kill” operation on the well Tuesday. The
procedure, in which heavy drilling mud is pumped into the well, appeared to be
working on Wednesday. The next step is drilling relief wells. So far, an
estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil have spewed into the Gulf of Mexico,
making it the largest oil spill in marine waters.
