Remains of John the Baptist Possibly Found in Bulgaria

Archaeologists in Bulgaria believe bone fragments of a skull, a hand and a tooth found in a reliquary may be those of John the Baptist. The alabaster reliquary was found during the excavation of a 5th century monastery on the island of Sveti Ivan in the Black Sea.

Excavation leader Kaimir Popkonstantinov believes the remains are those of John the Baptist because of a Greek inscription on the reliquary. The inscription includes the date June 24, the same day many churches celebrate Saint John’s birth.

According to the Gospels, John the Baptist prophesied the birth of Jesus Christ and baptized him in the Jordan River.
