Laura Dekker, 14, Begins Solo Sail Around the World

The 14-year-old Dutch girl who hopes to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world began her journey Wednesday. Laura Dekker, along with her father, set sail from Den Osse on her yacht, Guppy, at 9:10 a.m. Dekker will stop near Lisbon, Portugal to drop her father off and officially began sailing solo.

Dekker attempted to begin her journey last August, but was stopped when Dutch authorities placed her under state care because her parents refused to forbid the trip. A Dutch court ruled last October that she could attempt the voyage this year if she fulfilled certain requirements.
