Police are investigating the possible suicide of Samuel Israel, a former hedge fund manager who cheated investors in Bayou Group out of more than $400 million. Investigators believe Israel may have committed suicide to avoid serving his 20 year prison sentence.
Israel was sentenced to 20 years in prison on for stealing the hundreds of millions of dollars over an 8 year period.
The 48-year-old was scheduled to report to a New York jail Tuesday but failed to show up. State police found Israel’s car near the Bear Mountain Bridge. The phrase “Suicide is Painless” was written on the vehicle.
“There is an investigation going on at Bear Mountain related to that,” says a New York police officer.
Police have not found a body.
