Ron Paul Planning “Mini-Convention” in Minneapolis During Republican National Convention

While Ron Paul won’t be the nominee for the Republican Party in the 2008 presidential race the Texas congressman has no plans of going quietly as the 72-year-old has planned a “mini-convention” in Minneapolis on Sept. 2, one day after the Republican National Convention kicks off in St. Paul.

According to Paul’s campaign spokesman Jesse Benton, “There is a growing surge of people out there just craving" for a return "to traditional American government, limited government that places personal liberty first and places an emphasis on personal responsibility and essentially gets out of the way after that.”

Paul had wanted a speaking role at the RNC yet was denied because he refused to back Party nominee John McCain. Having threatened to stage his own convention if he was denied, Paul now hopes to place 11,000 supporters into Williams Arena at the University of Minnesota for the one-day event.

The RNC will be held in nearby St. Paul at the Xcel Energy Center.

Details about the Ron Paul mini-convention are expected to be announced on Thursday but it is believed the focus won’t be on attacking the GOP but rather encouraging it to return to its roots.
