An Army helicopter rescued two hikers stranded on Mount Rainer on Wednesday while a third hiker has died following an unexpected blizzard forced the hikers to make camp overnight on the popular Washington State attraction.
The man and woman rescued on Wednesday morning had suffered frostbite and hypothermia while the woman’s husband was killed in the blizzard. The rescued hikers were taken to Madigan Hospital near Tacoma for treatment.
The three hikers had been on a day trip to Camp Muir, a staging area with an elevation about 10,000 feet, on Monday when they were caught by a blizzard that dumped two feet of snow.
Rescue rangers received a call early Tuesday morning from the hikers but were unable to send out a search party due to the weather.
