Canada’s Prime Minister to Offer Public Apology to Aboriginals

Prime Minister Stephen Harper will deliver a public apology Wednesday to more than 80,000 surviving aboriginal students who were forced to be a part of a program aimed at integrating them into Canadian society.

Harper said he will address the group of Canada’s indigenous people who have been waiting a long time for an apology from the Parliament of Canada.

More than 150,000 aboriginal children were taken from their homes and forced to attend state-funded Christian schools from the 19th century until the 1970s. Physical and sexual abuse in the schools was rampant, with many students recounting beatings they endured simply for speaking their native languages. Many even lost touch with their parents.

Harper’s apology comes as Canada’s more than 1 million aboriginals seek formal recognition for the widespread cultural devastation they endured. The apology also accompanies the award of compensation to families of students who were forced to spend years in the residential schools.

Aboriginals are among Canada’s poorest and most disadvantaged. Epidemic rates of alcoholism and drug addiction on reservations are said to be the assimilation program’s legacy.
