S. Korea Vows ‘Fresh Start’ Following Protests over U.S. Beef Imports

South Korea President Lee Myung-bak vows to make a fresh start Wednesday after tens of thousands of protestors took to the streets, angry over a deal to resume beef imports from the United States. The deal is on hold following rioting that began Tuesday.

Lee’s entire Cabinet and top civil servants have offered to resign from their posts following the protests. South Korean negotiators headed to meetings in Washington Wednesday to try and change the terms of the arrangement.

The deal would resume imports of U.S. beef following a ban imposed five years ago when a case of mad cow disease was reported in the United States. The agreement would have helped to improve a sluggish Korean economy and provided more than 300,000 jobs.

Meat products contaminated with the illness have been linked to variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a rare and fatal malady in humans.
