Dalai Lama Says Tibet Talks with China May Resume Next Month

The Dalai Lama announced Thursday that strategic talks with China’s government on resolving Tibetan unrest may resume next month after informal talks in May were interrupted by the devastating May 12 earthquake.

The exiled spiritual leader of Tibet renewed his call for Beijing to grant Tibet ”meaningful autonomy,” saying he supported China’s call for a stable and harmonious society.

“Stability, unity must come from the heart, not a gun,” the Dalai Lama said. “And harmonious society must come from … trust. Give Tibetans meaningful autonomy. That will satisfy Tibetans.”

The Dalai Lama also urged supporters not to cause trouble during the Olympic torch relay which will make its way through Tibet June 19-21. “We have fully supported the Olympic Games right from the beginning. The torch is part of that,” he said.

He implored Tibetan supporters not to cause trouble during the Beijing Olympics which are set to begin Aug. 8.
