Tendai Biti, the active secretary general of the Movement for Democratic Change party in Zimbabwe, is now facing treason charges and could face the death penalty if found guilty.
Biti was detained earlier Thursday after arriving at Harare international airport following a two month stay in South Africa. Police had made it known that Biti would be arrested upon arrival back in Zimbabwe yet he returned to help push the MDC campaign and its leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
According to a BBC report Biti is being charged with treason “for publishing a document that was explaining a transitional strategy around March 26.” He is facing additional charges for proclaiming victory in the March 29 presidential election prior to official results being published.
Biti had returned to help push the campaign of Tsvangirai who will face current president Robert Mugabe in a run-off election on June 27.
