Earthquake Anniversary has China on Alert

Chinese police were on alert Thursday for protests marking the one month anniversary of a devastating earthquake.

Schools destroyed in the May 12 quake had been cordoned off, preventing grieving parents who lost children in the collapse from holding vigils around the debris.

Public outrage over the deaths of so many children in school buildings that did not withstand the 7.9 magnitude earthquake has the Chinese government preparing for the possibility of massive protests.

Shoddy construction of the schools has been blamed by parents who demanded an investigation. Surveys of the wreckage point to poor design, a lack of steel reinforcement bars in the concrete and the use of substandard building materials as reasons for the collapse of schools in areas where other buildings remain standing.

Investigation results are due on or around June 20.
