Closer Crisis in New York

The Mets just can't seem to catch a break when it looks they are ready to break out from their struggles to get on a roll of winning. The team hasn't had trouble getting lead in games, the problem is being able to maintain them for the 27th out of the game. Closer Wagner struggles continued with his most recent blown save Thursday against the D'backs in a 5-4 lost at Shea Stadium.

The Mets received a solid performance from Johan Santana giving them seven innings of shutout ball and striking out a total of ten D'backs. D'backs starter Dan Haren held his own against Santana giving them a chance to win allowing two runs in six innings of work.

The Mets seem to have the game in hand adding runs in the bottom of the 7th to give the team a 4-0 lead. The D'backs chipped away at the lead scoring two runs in the top of the 8th off reliever Smith and eventually battling from behind in the top of the 9th off closer Wagner.

Wagner has now blown three straight save opportunities and his confidence has to at the lowest point of his career. The Mets will have to get Wagner back on track if they are going to have any chance at catching up to the Phillies in the division. Once a problem of the past for the Mets, the closers role is now once again a weakness.
