It looks like the European Union Lisbon Reform treaty designed to streamline decision making among its expanding membership maybe hitting a serious snag as Ireland appears set to reject the agreement, leaving the del in question as all members of the EU must ratify a treaty for it to become realized.
According to Ireland’s Justice Minister Dermot Ahern polls indicate Irish voters were not accepting of the treaty and it was almost certain the opposition vote would win out.
Many EU leaders have blamed the defeat on misrepresentation by Irish party leaders who were not in favor of the Lisbon Treaty. Many of the issues voters took exception with were not issues that appeared in the Treaty.
The goal of the Lisbon Treaty was to help the EU deal with Eastern expansion, streamlining decision making, removal of national veto in particular policy areas, and a move to select a new president of the European Council.
