Taiwan, China Reach Tourism Agreement

Taiwan and China reached an agreement Friday on a deal that will expand tourism by opening charter flights between the two countries. The flights, which could begin as early as July 4, will be the first direct flights since civil war broke out between the two sides in 1949.

The agreement was reached following Thursday’s announcement the two governments had agreed to establish permanent diplomatic offices in each other’s territory for the first time.

Friday’s tourism agreement could mean a potential 1 million visitors annually for Taiwan, compared to the current 80,000 Chinese tourists visiting the country each year.

Chinese and Taiwanese airlines will share the flights equally along routes between the Chinese cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xiamen and Nanjing and the Taiwanese capital of Taipei plus seven other cities on the island.
