President Bush Seeks Afghan Aid

US President George Bush was in Europe Friday to seek greater monetary and military contributions for Afghanistan.

In his comments at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Bush urged allies to stand by Afghanistan, saying that Europe and the United States could not afford to let it become a base for terrorism again.

Bush applauded French president Nicolas Sarkozy for committing to send in additional troops, saying world leaders needed to make greater contributions to Afghanistan.

More than 8,000 people were killed in insurgency-related attacks in Afghanistan last year, the most since the 2001 U.S. invasion ousted the brutal former Taliban regime.
