Ireland Rejects European Union Treaty

Irish voters have rejected the European Union reform treaty, leaving Ireland and the EU in uncharted territory. Rejection leaves the EU operating under current rules.

Eighteen EU countries had already ratified the treaty, formally known as the Lisbon Treaty, but all 27 member nations must approve for the deal to become realized.

The goal of the Lisbon Treaty was to help the EU deal with Eastern expansion and streamline decision making.

EU leaders must now determine if a new constitution should be drafted, a process which could take years, or simply ask the Irish people to vote again.
